Depicus WOL - Simple Wake-on-LAN “Magic Packet” Generator Utilities

I just finished writing an article yesterday on my hacker not cracker blog about the mysterious yet ubiquitous Wake on LAN function featured in many motherboards and network interface cards. In it, I mentioned the basics of creating a “magic packet.” As I pointed out, a magic packet is data consisting of “FF FF FF FF FF FF” followed by 16 repetitions of the listening network device’s MAC address. I also revealed that I use a PHP script to facilitate in generating that packet. Before I modified the PHP script, I used a simple little freeware program released by Depicus.

IZArc - Universal Multi-format Archive Compression Utility

The 90s … I remember it like it was yesterday. Gosh, I can’t believe how much of a newbie I was back then. But things have changed … like compression utilities. In the 90s, compression was the rage. We had small hard drive capacities, tiny portable storage mediums (floppy disks), and unimpressive dial-up Internet speeds. It is no wonder that compression was popular. We had to stick as much information in what little we had. The two reigning compression formats back then (and today) was gzip (*nix operating systems) and zip (Microsoft Windows operating systems). The problem was that Windows users only had one way to manipulate ZIP files, WinZIP.

Virtual Floppy Drive - Floppy Disk Imaging and Virtualization Part II

In the previous article of this two-part series, I revealed how to create floppy disk image file from Diskcopy.exe. I was trying to find tools similar to IsoBuster and Daemon Tools - which are used for CD Imaging and Virtualization - that dealt with floppy disk images. As I mentioned in that article, for us PC users, floppy disk and their corresponding tools are necessary since we still haven’t made the complete switch to CDs and USB/Firewire portable drives (unlike our lucky Mac counterparts:)).
